How to use this tool
- Paste CSV input or choose a CSV file and select Input and output delimiter. A selected file takes precedence.
- Choose Column to split, a nonempty Literal separator inside each field, and Expected number of parts from 2 to 20.
- Enter Replacement headers (JSON string array) with one unique nonempty header per part, distinct from retained headers. Review formula protection, select Split CSV column, then download split-column.csv.
Examples
With separator : and three parts, a::c becomes fields a, an empty string and c.
Limitations
- Up to 5 MiB UTF-8 CSV and 5 MiB replacement-header JSON. Separator: 1-100 UTF-16 units; 2-20 parts. Output: 50,000 data rows, 500 columns, 500,000 cells including header and 20 MiB; 30-second worker limit.
- Every original row must have exactly the expected number of non-overlapping literal parts. No regex, trimming, padding, truncation, discarded remainder or type coercion.
- Input headers and final output headers must be unique/nonempty. Replacement headers cannot collide with retained headers, including collisions introduced by enabled formula protection.
- Default-on spreadsheet protection can prepend apostrophes to formula-like fields and headers; explicit opt-out preserves exact parsed strings with execution risk. Complete signed numeric strings keep their spelling.
- Quoted source delimiters and embedded newlines are parsed before field splitting. Pasted line endings normalize to LF; UTF-8 file input preserves embedded line endings. The selected CSV delimiter is used in split-column.csv.
